Rounding, order of operations, tables

Nearest tenth means one decimal place. Nearest hundredth means two. Look only at the next digit. 5 or more, round up. In 8.274 the tenths digit is 2 and the next digit is 7, so the nearest tenth is 8.3. The nearest hundredth looks at the 4 after the 7, so it stays 8.27.

PEMDAS is the guide’s name for order of operations. Parentheses first. Then multiply and divide from left to right. Then add and subtract from left to right. Multiplication does not automatically jump ahead of division. 8 + 12 ÷ 4 × 2 is 14, not 10.

On a table or bar chart, read the title and the units before the bars. Then do the operation the question asks. More than means subtract. The tallest bar is not always the answer.

Area of a rectangle or square is length × width. A 9-foot square is 81 square feet, not 36. Volume of a box is length × width × height. Circumference, the distance around a circle, is about 3.14 × diameter. If you add the sides, you are finding a perimeter or nothing useful.

Worked example

8 + 12 ÷ 4 × 2

14. Divide and multiply left to right: 12 ÷ 4 = 3, 3 × 2 = 6, then 8 + 6.
